If you spend a lot — or all — of your time in your head, it might be time to come in for a safe landing. That’s where grounding comes in.
Grounding helps bring you out of your frazzled, overworked mind, into your body, and into the present moment. It is the process of stabilizing our energy and bringing ourselves back into balance energetically.
When you are ungrounded, you may feel:
- Anxious
- Overwhelmed
- Spacey
- Have racing thoughts
- Have difficulty concentrating
- Easily distracted
- Off center
- Out of balance
- Out of touch with what you need — physically, mentally, or emotionally
Internally, you may feel overrun by emotions. This is a chaotic and confusing place to be!
Bring Your Inner World Back Into Alignment
By grounding this excess energy, we can return to our center and the present moment. We can reconnect with our intuition to find out what we need or receive guidance on the next step. Grounding brings our inner world back into alignment so we can move forward from our heart space rather than our head space.
In other words, a kind, gentle voice will be piloting, not the whirling, twirling, harsh inner critic voices. Talk about turbulence!
Taking Charge — Moving through emotions with grace
Grounding empowers us to take charge of our emotional state so we don’t remain consumed by our emotions, perhaps overidentifying with them. We are not our emotions. They are meant to provide us with important information about our interactions and relationships, guiding us towards what feels right and telling us what’s not okay.
Grounding also gives us the space and clarity we need to acknowledge our emotions, so we can understand the needs underneath them. It’s not about denying, ignoring, or repressing our feelings.
Rather, grounding allows us to move through our emotions with grace and ease. Even a bit of grace and ease! 😉 This enables us to accept what’s happening, even if we don’t like it, bringing us back into the flow of the present.
Let’s get out of autopilot and take charge of our flight path – towards safe ground!
There are many different ways to ground your energy. Here are five actions you can choose from right now, or any time, to bring that turbulent plane of cognitive energy closer to the ground — maybe for a full, gentle landing!
1. Take a walk.
Simple, straightforward, and powerful. Choose to be as present and mindful as possible as you walk. This will help clear your mind and get some space. Imagine the Earth recharging you, and your body releasing tension, overwhelm, and anything heavy with each step. Make it fun. If your attention wanders, gently guide it back to your breath, your feet, or the beauty of the Earth around you.
Even standing outside for a few minutes can do wonders, especially barefoot on the grass.
You can also try this as you walk: Moving Meditation
2. Visualization
Sit straight in a chair and imagine the back of the chair as a loving tree trunk that is supporting you. Place your hands over your heart or on your legs, and bring gentle focus to your root and heart energy. Imagine being nourished by this tree and letting anything you don’t need to be absorbed by its roots, or whisked away by its branches. What kind of tree has shown up for you? Just notice this. Or envision your favourite tree.
Try the Tree Meditation or the Christmas Tree Aura Meditation to help you imagine this grounding visualization.
3. Gratitude.
Finding even tiny things to be grateful for helps shift our energy and bring us back into the present moment. Gratitude for the Earth and your root chakra (including your feet and legs) will particularly help you feel grounded and centered. Gratitude can also be expressed through artwork, writing, or repeating affirmations of gratitude – silently, or out loud.
In my early days of practicing these techniques, and even now at times, my mind can feel so busy it feels very difficult to focus. Combining gratitude with walking really helped me. To pull myself out of my racing thoughts, I focused on saying “thank you” silently, or out loud if it helps, with every step I took, so it became a chant. This strategy really brought me into the present moment and out of the busyness of my mind, and it also gave me a huge mood boost! Suddenly I felt confident and connected to my heart.
4. Breathe.
Bring your attention to your legs, feet, and the Earth. Deepen your breath and imagine it flowing down your legs, out your feet, and into the Earth. You can also breathe any stress or anything heavy down and into the Earth to help balance your energy and calm your mind.
I found this method particularly helpful when I was working in an office, not at home. I could just take even a couple of minutes at my desk or in the bathroom to focus on my breath, and send that swirling energy down into the Earth. Even a few seconds, or one breath, makes a difference. It’s an intention to self-regulate, and every breath, every second of practice, builds your skills over time.
Tip! The other great thing about this strategy at work is that others probably can’t tell that you’re doing it. They will, however, notice the energy shift, and in my experience, even feel calmer themselves! Often as soon as I practiced this myself, someone would come up and thank me for my calm energy.
5. Meditate.
Even a few minutes of sitting quietly, and allowing your thoughts to float on by, can be enormously beneficial for your health and recentering yourself. You can also focus on the colour red, which is the colour of the root chakra, and helps to strengthen it. Meditating on a grounding affirmation or the Earth for a few minutes will help slow your mind too. Don’t worry if your thoughts keep racing and you feel you’re doing it wrong. It will still help your nervous system, and in time, your mind will feel calmer. It’s all about practice!
A Bonus Strategy!
Reiki helps tremendously! Receiving a Reiki session regularly is one of my top grounding tools. There’s nothing like having someone hold compassionate space for you to help you feel deeply connected and centred.
And I find that it makes it much easier for me to practice grounding in my day-to-day life when I’m receiving regular support and care.
I know how distorted and confusing life can feel when we get stuck in our heads for too long. I’ve been there too. My plane certainly heads towards the stratosphere every chance it gets! Grounding as often as I can remember is essential for me.
And we help each other ground and recenter all the time around here at LunaHolistic! We’d love to help you too.
